Obituary

Maurice Gilliland Maurice Gilliland, age 83 of Fremont, passed away Thursday, April 6, 2000 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility. He was born on December 10, 1916 in Dayton Township to Clifford and Lillian (Greene) Gilliland. He married Florence Martin who preceded him in death on June 18, 1966. He later married Della M. Kolk on July 7, 1967 in Fremont. Maurice and his brother, Russell "Bud" formed Gilliland Transfer Company in 1935, doing business primarily with Gerber Products Company until 1982 when the business was sold to CW Trucking. After his retirement from trucking, he spent time in farming where he operated the Gilliland Angus Farms. He was the past director of the Michigan Trucking Association; past director of the Irregular Route Common Carrier Conference of American Trucking Associaton; past director of the former Fremont Bank & Trust (Old Kent Bank of Fremont); member of the Newaygo Pilgrim Lodge #131 where he was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite; Life Member of the Saladin Shrine, Valley of Grand Rapids; Loyal Order of Moose, Fremont Lodge #1555. He is survived by his wife, Della of Fremont; 3 daughters, Judy (Larry) Zandvliet of Fremont; Lydea (Jerry) Mansfield of Fremont; Cynthia (Kolk) Smith of Wyoming, Michigan; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Raymond (Evelyn) Gilliland of Fremont; brother-in-law, William "Buck" (Bonnie) Martin; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death a brother, Russell "Bud" Gilliland and one sister and one brother-in-law, Maize & Jim Rop. Memorial services were held on Tuesday, April 11, 2000 at 2pm from the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Frank Vietze presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery. Friends may consider the Fremont Area Foundation Endowment Fund for either Newaygo Medical Care Facility or the First Congregational United Church of Christ.
