Maurine J. Towne, age 89 of Fremont, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Maurine was born on January 20, 1922 in Mears, Michigan to Frank Edward and Anna Graff (Sweet) Schmidt and has been a longtime resident of the Fremont area. Maurine had been a production worker at Gerber Products Company in Fremont for over 40 years until her retirement in 1982. Maurine married Kenneth R. Towne in 1971 at the White Cloud Church of God. She enjoyed playing any string instruments, especially the guitar, had enjoyed riding her motorcycle in her younger years and was known to many in the community as Grandma Sweetie. Maurine was a charter member of the Fremont Church of the Nazarene in Fremont. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth of Fremont; her son, Warren (Pamla) Hills of Big Rapids; 2 grandsons; 2 great grandchildren; her step daughter, Barbara (Rodne) LeCouteur of Newaygo; 2 step grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; her brother, Eldon (Janet) Schmidt of Boston, Massachussetts; several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her brothers, Norris Schmidt and Cedric Sweet. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2011 from 12-2pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel with funeral services at 2pm at the funeral home. Interment will take place at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont.
