Melvin Gerald Vander Sloot, age 80 of White Cloud, passed away surrounded by his family following a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, May 28, 2018 at the Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Health Services in Fremont. Mel was born on August 25, 1937 in Sioux City, Iowa. Mel joined the United States Marine Corps where he served during the Korean War until his honorable discharge. Mel later married Loretta Palazzolo on October 31, 1959 in Grand Rapids and Loretta preceded him in death on February 8, 2012. Mel had been a painter and plumber for Ferris State College for 27 years until his retirement and then continued to paint independently in the Newaygo County area until his final retirement. Mel enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family, but especially treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mel was an active member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in White Cloud.
Mel is survived by his children, Michael (Sherrie) Vander Sloot of White Cloud; Mark (Tess) Vander Sloot of White Cloud; Laura (Matt) Priest of White Cloud; Lisa (Brent) VanderMate of White Cloud; 9 grandchildren, Nicole Vander Sloot; Rebecca Vander Sloot; Amy (Aaron) Miller; Scott Vander Sloot; Ana (Brad) Burgess; Ryan Priest; Clara Priest; Jacob (Cayla) VanderMate; Caleb VanderMate; 8 great grandchildren; his brothers, Virgil (Carol) Vander Sloot of Grand Rapids; Roger (Phyllis) Vander Sloot of Grand Rapids; Barry (Vicki) Vander Sloot of Borculo; his sister, Alice (Larry) Bakale of Grand Haven. He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta; his brothers, Francis and Richard Vander Sloot.
