Michael D. Abbott, age 70 of Fremont, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at the Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Hospital in Fremont. Michael was born on August 8, 1951 in Chandler, Arizona to Ronald Ray and Wilma Bell (Frye) Abbott. Michael joined the United States Army and served for 8 years until his honorable discharge as Sgt.. Michael met and married Marikay Durham on December 23, 1974 in Honolulu, Hawaii. While Michael and Marikay were living in Hawaii, he obtained his private pilots license and flew around the Hawaiian islands. Michael lived in Chandler, Arizona where he worked in the semi conductor computer industry for 10 years and traveled extensively in Asia and Europe fixing computers. Michael moved to the Fremont area in August 1992 and then began a career in the maintenance department at Gerber Products Company until his retirement in 2019 after 18 years. Michael enjoyed radio controlled airplanes, hunting, fishing, boating, bar-b-ques with family and fixing and restoring old guns. However, one of Michael's greatest joys were his 3 granddaughters.
Michael is survived by his wife of 47 years, Marikay of Fremont; his sons, Michael D. Abbott II of Fremont; Mitch D. (Amy) Abbott of Fremont; Marshal Abbott of Holland; his granddaughters, Pearyn Ensley Abbott, Addisyn Rose Abbott, and Nataleigh Grace Abbott; his brothers, George Abbott of Apache Junction, Arizona; Randy Abbott of Chandler, Arizona; several sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws and nieces and nephews. Michael was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Katrin Marie Abbott on May 24, 2019; and by his sister, Rhonda Brown.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held in the Spring of 2022 at the Maple Grove Cemetery. Friends may consider memorial contributions to the Newaygo County Compassion Home.
