Michael R. Austin, age 78 of Fremont, passed away Friday, May 12, 2017 at his home. Mike was born on July 20, 1939 in Detroit to William and Cecilia (Murphy) Austin and later married Kathleen Sterenberg on March 5, 1966 in Detroit. Mike moved to the Fremont area in 1976 from Williamston, Michigan and had been the supervisor for Special Education at the Newago County Intermediate School District for over 30 years until his retirement in 2000. Mike had been a harness horse breeder and racer for many years, enjoyed collecting classic cars, spending his winters in Florida and antiquing. Mike was a Detroit Tigers fan and had coached Fremont Summer Baseball for many years.

Mike is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kathleen of Fremont; his sons, Don (Rebecca) Austin of Newaygo; Doug (Kristin) Austin of Zeeland; 8 grandchilren; 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son, Keith Austin.

Private graveside services will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery following cremation. Friends may consider memorial contributions to the Fremont Summer Baseball League, c/o Crandell Funeral Home.
