Michael Scott Veenstra, 50, of Fremont, MI, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, in Grand Rapids, MI under the compassionate care of hospice.

Michael was born to Fred and Karen Veenstra on July 12, 1976. He was the youngest of four boys. He was raised in Fremont with his brothers Ken, Kevin, and Brian Veenstra. He attended Fremont High School and participated in shot put for track and field.

He married his wife, Darlett, on May 20, 2010, on a once in a lifetime trip out west.

Michael worked as a talented sheet metal fabricator for many years. In his younger days he enjoyed welding, construction, golfing, bowling, camping, metal/country music and concerts.

Together, with his wife Darlett, he came to enjoy a quiet country life. Here he developed a deep love for animals, tending to horses, chickens, cats and dogs. Mike learned to cherish the simplicity of observing nature, including many birds and deer, in his own backyard. Nights spent watching favorites Guy Fieri and Bobby Flay gave him inspiration to experience new foods and restaurants.

Later, with his continued health struggles, he found solace in his Christian faith. His family is proud that he took steps towards alcohol recovery over the past few years. It is our hope that Michael’s story can help inspire others to choose the path of recovery.

Michael will be remembered as a simple, private man with a gentle spirit. In the words of a favorite song,

Michael is survived by his devoted wife, Darlett Neibarger; mother, Karen Veenstra; daughters, Molly Powles and Morgan Veenstra; stepchildren, Natasha (Tyler) Fair and Dakotha Weglarz; step grandchildren, Layla, Daphne and Tayvin; and beloved pets, Muffet, Twix, and Binx.

He is preceded in death by his father Fred Veenstra.

In honoring Michael’s wishes there will be no service at this time.
