Obituary

Mildred L. Akershoek, age 91 of Hesperia, passed away Monday, September 20, 2004 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Mildred was born on April 27, 1913 in Fremont to Cornelius and Flavia (Britton) Akershoek and has been a longtime resident of the area. She had been a school teacher for several years where she taught at Newaygo County Normal and also many north eastern county country schools and later started work as a secretary at Lear Siegler until her retirement. She was a member of the Hesperia United Methodist Church and Christian Womens Club. A member of AARP; MEAH Extension Group and had volunteered at the Newaygo County Clothes Closet for 16 years. She was a veteran of on the United States Navy where she served in the WAVES. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Myriel Akershoek of Fremont; her brother-in-law, Gerald Johnson of Owasso; her nieces, Lynn Diane Moe; Janice Sunderlin, Nancy Daily; her nephews, James Akershoek; Allen Akershoek; many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Nellie and 2 brothers, Clinton and Kenneth. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 23, 2004 from the Hesperia United Methodist Church with Rev. Brad Brillhart presiding with interment in the East Hesperia Cemetery. Friends may consider the Hesperia United Methodist Church Building Fund for memorial contributions in memory of Mildred.
