Obituary

Mildred May Wheeler Woodring passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. She was born to Lawrence O. Wheeler and Una May (VanOrder) Wheeler on April 1, 19l8. Mildred and her older brother Harry were born on their Grandfather Wheeler's Oklahoma homestead in the community of Prentiss, Beckham County, near Sayre, Oklahoma. Lawrence and Una were born and raised in Illinois. Soon after Mildred's birth, they returned to Illinois. They moved to Fremont, Michigan in April 1923. Mildred and Francis Arnold Woodring were married in Fremont on December 24, 1938. Mildred graduated from Fremont High School in 1936. She then worked as a secretary for the Michigan Bankers and Merchant's Mutual Fire Insurance Company until she left to become a full-time mother and homemaker. Mildred was enrolled in the Sciota, Illinois Methodist Church Cradle Roll Department in September 1918. She joined the Fremont United Methodist Church April 5, 1931 and from August 5, 2007 was the senior member of the Church. She has been a member of the different circles and organizations in the church and had worked on every committee except the Building Committee. Mildred had been a Campfire Girl, a Girl Scout, served as a leader in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a 4th Generation IOOF / Rebekah Lodge member, a Lifetime Member of the Rebekahs, and a member of several genealogy / historical societies. She enjoyed antiques and collectibles, especially family heirlooms and Gerber Products Company memorabilia. She also enjoyed history, geography and traveling. She was a Charter Member of the World War II Memorial. Survivors include her husband of over 74 years Francis Arnold Woodring, four sons: Gerald L. (Shirley) Woodring of Fremont, Richard A. (Theresa) Woodring of Fremont, Robert G. (Janet) Woodring of Davenport, Florida, and John W. (Bonnie) Woodring of Jackson, Michigan. Nine grandchildren, Deborah Truskoski, Douglas Woodring, Candice Todd, Christopher Woodring, Angela Chmura, Pamela McGarva, Nicholas Woodring, Brian Woodring, and Lisa Ashburn, nineteen great grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren also survive her. Other survivors include brother-in-law Hessel Wever, sister-in-law Agnes Carlson Wheeler, a granddaughter-in-law Darlene (Maynard) Woodring of Hesperia, Michigan, a stepsister Dorothy Stephens of the State of Washington, the family of Nell Couch and numerous nieces and nephews and a few first cousins. Mildred was predeceased by her parents and her stepparents, an infant sister Baby Wheeler, an infant great-grandson, Nathaniel Arnold Woodring and her oldest grandson /grandchild, Scott Allen Woodring. Her brothers Harry Lawrence Wheeler and Kenneth LeRoy Wheeler, her sister Lora Ann (Wheeler) Wever and her stepsister, Nell Couch also predeceased her. Services will be held at the Fremont United Methodist Church, (where she was a member for over 82 years), at 12 noon on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, with Rev. Martin T. Cobb officiating. Relatives and friends can meet with the family from 10 to 12 PM at the church prior to the service. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Fremont, Michigan.
