Obituary

Mona Jean (Canniff) Bode, age 98 of Grand Rapids, formerly of Fremont, passed away Friday, August 26, 2022 at the Raybrook Manor in Grand Rapids. Mona Jean was born on December 13, 1923 in Newaygo County to William F. and Leah M. (Cosens) Miller and graduated from Fremont High School in 1942. Mona graduated from Muskegon Business College and attended Ferris State University for additional credits. Mona Jean married Norman Canniff on April 18, 1944 and he preceded her in death on April 7, 2000. She later married Robert Bode and he preceded her in death on November 27, 2019. Mona Jean had been an accountant and income tax preparer for a number of years. She became an IRS Enrolled Agent in 1967, an active member of both the Michigan and National Accountants Associations and owned and operated with her partner, Canniff & Hooker Accounting and Tax Business. After retirement, she worked at several CPA offices and in volunteer tax service work. After selling her interest in the business, she and Norman moved to Apopka, Florida where they lived for 7 years before moving back to Fremont and eventually to the Holland Home – Raybrook Campus in Grand Rapids. Mona Jean had been a member of the Second Christian Reformed Church, First Baptist Church in Fremont and Calvary Baptist Church in Grand Rapids. Mona Jean was active in Missions, teaching and outreach in her churches and she and her husband, Norman spent 4 weeks in Scotland one summer helping with Missions. Mona Jean is survived by her children, Nancy (William) Swaney; Ronald Canniff; Catherine (Danny) Cherpes; Mary (Ronald) Dunham; 2 stepchildren, Jeanne Bode Browning and Elwood (Jan) Bode; 8 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; 15 step grandchildren; 16 step great grandchildren. Mona Jean was preceded in death by her brothers, Marvin H. Miller and Edward W. Miller; her sister, Barbara M. Maxson and her daughter-in-law, Shirley Canniff. VISITATION: Friday, September 2, 2022 from 4-6pm at Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel 7193 W. 48th Street Fremont MI 49412. FUNERAL SERVICES : Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 11am at the Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel. INTERMENT : Maple Grove Cemetery.
