Obituary

Myriel passed on to heaven peacefully on 12 June 2025 at her residence in Holland, Michigan. Having been surrounded by family & friends. She was born on 13 September1925 as Myriel Alzina Powers in Vermontville, Michigan. Myriel was a long-time resident of Fremont, Michigan. She married Kenneth M. Akershoek on 28 July 1945. They had two children Lynn and Alan Akershoek. They lived and worked on a farm north of Fremont. Myriel spent many an hour working on the family farm, raising her family and working at Gerber Baby Food. Later, she went on to work at Howmet Aerospace Corp. in Whitehall, MI for more than 20 years. After retirement Myriel volunteered for Newaygo County Services in several ways. The main gift she gave and always enjoyed was being able to visit with the elderly and homebound people that needed assistance and company.

Myriel had many hobbies and always loved to have family gatherings any time of the year, whether it was the holiday family gatherings, having the picnic at the river, loading up the 'Floaters' in her pick up and taking to the state park so everyone could float to her house. She loved to travel with family and friends when she was able and always seemed to try new things even whitewater rafting in Wyoming or 'Kissing' the Blarney Stone in Ireland.

Myriel was always involved with the Methodist Church, from East Denver to Hesperia and later in Fremont. For entertainment after retirement, she bowled in several leagues. She took "GREAT" pride as being known as the oldest female bowler in Fremont at that time. She was looking forward to reaching 100 years of age but fell just short of September. Myriel published a book about her life in 2002 named "A September Child" which was celebrated by all her family and friends.

Myriel was a beloved mother, aunt, grandmother, sister-in-law, and friend. She is survived by her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Natalie Akershoek, who split their time between Las Vegas, NV, and Holland, MI. Also carrying forward her legacy are her son-in-law, Charles Moe of Fremont, MI, and her five cherished grandchildren: Steven Moe of Holton, MI, Alicia and Jason Cooley of Delta, CO, Sheryl Moe of Annandale, VA, Kenneth and Lisa Akershoek of Fennville, MI, and Nataniel Akershoek of Holland, MI. Myriel adored her three great-grandchildren, Mason Akershoek of Marquette, MI, Hayden Akershoek of Holland, MI, and Kamren Akershoek of Fennville, MI. She is also survived by her loving brother-in-law, William "Bill"Weiss, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenneth Akershoek, her cherished daughter, Lynn Moe, her parents, Zina and Irene Powers, and her siblings: Knox Powers, Cecil Powers, Anita Weiss, Clarys Howell, Mark Powers, Delven Powers, and Jean Powers.
