Nancy Reber Johnson, devoted mother, loving wife, author, fiber artist and talented painter died peacefully on June 8, 2023, at the age of 98. Her departure has left an indescribable void in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Born on August 25, 1924 to Harry D. Reber Sr. and Jean Kingsley Reber of Fremont, Nancy received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan and attended the Masters Program at UCLA in Fashion Design. She met her future husband Ted L. Johnson in kindergarten and their love served as the foundation for a life of service to their family and the community. Nancy was the epitome of grace, intelligence, and creativity. She had passion for the written word, which led her to write a column weekly for the Fremont Times-Indicator. Nancy's unique ability to connect with people through her words made her a beloved figure in Fremont and beyond.
Nancy was an incredibly talented fiber artist and painter. She poured her heart and soul into every creation, infusing them with her vibrant spirit and boundless imagination. Her artwork resonated with profound beauty, depicting portraits and landscapes that reflected her deep appreciation for the world around her. Through her art, Nancy left a lasting impression on all who experienced her talent.
Nancy found her greatest joy in her roles as a mother and a wife. Nancy's unconditional love and devotion to her family was unparalleled. As a partner to her beloved husband, Ted L. Johnson, she shared a deep bond built on mutual respect, love, and companionship that spanned over seven decades. Their partnership was an inspiration to all who knew them, reminding us of the enduring power of love.
In the community, Nancy served on the library board for many years. Dedicating herself to promoting literacy and learning, recognizing the profound impact access to knowledge has on individuals and society. Her contributions to the library were invaluable, ensuring that future generations would have access to a world of information and inspiration. She and Ted were instrumental in the founding of Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts, providing a lasting resource for the community.
Nancy Reber Johnson's legacy will live on through the memories she created, the words she wrote, and the art she shared. She will forever be remembered as a pillar of the Fremont community, a source of wisdom and inspiration, and a beacon of love and compassion. Though her physical presence may be gone, her spirit will continue to guide and inspire all those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Ted L. Johnson, her son, Bruce Kingsley Johnson, her brother, Harry D Reber Jr. and her dear sister, Marjorie Salata, with whom she shared a close bond and an abiding sense of humor. She is survived by her son David Earle Johnson of Fremont, Marjorie Johnson Derks of Croton, Peter Reber Johnson (spouse Renee Fabry) of Madison, Wisconsin, grandchildren Sam Derks (Paula Reed), Hannah Webb (Travis), Isaac Johnson (Marit), Eliza Johnson, many great-grandchildren and a multitude of family and friends who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.
A private memorial service will be held at a future date to celebrate Nancy Reber Johnson's remarkable life and bid farewell to an extraordinary woman who touched the lives of so many. Nancy will be laid to rest at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Fremont. Friends may consider memorial contributions to the Newaygo County Council for the Arts or the Newaygo County Compassion Home.
