Orlo "Sonny" "Shorty" Carrier died peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Saturday, August 25, 2018. Orlo was born on September 10, 1928 in Muskegon to George Leo and Gertrude (LaNore) Carrier and married Betty Becklin on November 9, 1951.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty and their six children: Sheryl Carrier of Grand Rapids, Dee (Dale) Korson of Fremont, Pat (Chuck) Arends of Nunica, Dan Carrier of Fremont, Sam (Michelle) Carrier of Spring Lake, and Todd (Robin) Carrier of Nunica. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Sonny was preceded in death by his father and mother, George and Gertrude Carrier, and by his brother and sister, Donald Carrier and Alberta Gillette.
As a young man, Sonny was an auto mechanic and owned and operated the garage Sonny's Place for a number of years. He and Betty wanted their children raised in the country and, soon after the birth of their third child, they purchased an 80 acre farm in Nunica. It was there that Sonny began dairy farming. Twenty years later he and Betty purchased a farm in Fremont, moved the dairy herd to the new farm, and continued farming until his death.
Sonny loved to hunt, especially deer hunting in the Upper Peninsula. He started an annual family hunting trek to Gwinn, Michigan in 1947, and kept the tradition going until 2014. In the Deer Hunting issue of Michigan Out-of-Doors magazine, Sonny and his hunting buddies are featured in an article on tent camping, which is what the group always did.
Known for his mechanical ingenuity, Sonny was also written up in an article in the Muskegon Chronicle titled: "Genius Denied". At the time, he was working an off-farm 2nd shift job as a welder at McInerny's Spring and Wire in Grand Rapids. Between farming and his other job, Sonny was getting 4 hours or less of sleep each night and having a hard time waking up for milking. So, he hooked up his alarm clock to his car's horn. When the alarm tripped, the car horn sounded, loudly, waking up not only Sonny but some of the neighbors—thus the complaint to the authorities.
