Obituary

Paul R. Conklin, age 92 of Fremont, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014 at his home following a short illness. Paul was born on September 12, 1921 in Fremont to Leon Dow and Dorothy Mae (Sherwood) Conklin and has been a lifelong resident of the Fremont area. Paul married Joyce Bridges on Jun 17, 1947 and she preceded him in death on January 6, 1972. Paul later married Donna J. Seymour on June 16, 1974 in Portage. Paul graduated from Fremont High School in 1939 and later joined the United States Army where he served during World War II. Following his discharge, Paul returned to Fremont and started work at the Fremont Post Office until his retirement as Postmaster in 1984. Paul was a lifelong member of the Fremont United Methodist Church where he had been active in various committees and member of the church choir his entire life. Paul had also been an active member of the Fremont Community Choir, a former member of the Fremont Lions Club, past president of the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, and had been a little league baseball coach in Fremont for several years. In his retirement years, Paul enjoyed woodworking, taking care of his lawn and yard and was an avid Detroit Tiger Fan. Paul is survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna of Fremont; his children, Steven Conklin of St. Joseph; Patrick (Mickey) Conklin of Fremont; Michelle (Ronald) Burnett of St. Cloud, Florida; James Conklin (s.o. Jackie Jenkins) of Biglerville, Pennsylvania; step children, Patrick Hamilton of Portage; Vicki (James) Ayers of Hastings; Peggy (Jeff) Weiden of Kentwood; 18 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; his sister, Lavinna Haynor of Hudsonville; brothers, David Conklin of Holland; his sister, Pat (Darrell) Proctor of Fremont; step son-in-law, John Merritt of Hastings; several nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his grandson, Lance Cpl. Jason K. Burnett and by his step daughter, Jane Merritt. VISITATION : Friday, August 8, 2014 from 5-8pm at Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. MEMORIAL SERVICES : Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 11am at the Fremont United Methodist Church. INTERMENT : Fremont United Methodist Church Memorial Garden and Maple Grove Cemetery. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : Fremont United Methodist Church.
