Eugene Paul Scanlon, age 91 of Holton, passed away, Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Paul was born on May 17, 1926 in Phelps, Wisconsin to Edward and Ellen (Frizzell) Scanlon. Paul moved to the Holton area at the age of 17 and graduated from Fremont High School. Paul was drafted into the United States Army at the age of 18 where he served for 2 years in the United States Army during World War II with the First Cavalry Division in Japan and the Philippines. After his discharge, Paul returned to Holton and married Eloda Syers on June 27, 1947 in Muskegon. Eloda preceded him in death on December 24, 2007. Paul had worked at the Teledyne Continental Motors Company for many years until his retirement. Paul was a 58 year member of the Holton American Legion, Post #397 where he had been the Captain of the Legion Honor Guard for over 40 years. Paul had played, been an umpire, was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and truly enjoyed watching and listening to baseball games. After he could no longer play baseball, Paul took up the game of golf which he enjoyed for many years. Paul also enjoyed watching football, playing cards and had followed Boys High School basketball for all teams in the State of Michigan. Paul was well known for his patriotism and his dedication to displaying the American Flag and was also a member of the Holton United Methodist Church
Paul is survived by his children, Gary (Karen) Scanlon of Brighton, MI; Althea Stevens of Muskegon; Diane (Gerald) Beattie of Holton; daughter-in-law, Pamela (Steve) Smith of Fremont; his grandchildren, Becky (Brent) Deur of Fremont; Christy (Brian) Schaub of Muskegon; Nicole Sands of Holton; Karlyn (Howard) DeGram of Grand Haven; Michael (Shannon) Scanlon stationed with the U.S Air Force in Grand Ledge, Michigan; Kendra Scanlon of Austin, Texas; Blake Smith of Muskegon; 10 great grandchildren, Logan, Peyton, Jaxon, Drew, Tyler, Luke, Ava, Allison, Tyler, Brent, Emma, Aaron, and Gabrielle; his sister, Patsy Williams of Spring Lake; his brother, Roland Scanlon of Muskegon; several nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his son, Brent Scanlon, his sister, Peggy Berglund; brother, Harvey Scanlon; his sister-in-law, Barb Scanlon.
