Peter Caruso, age 97 of Fremont, passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at the Borgess Nursing Home in Kalamazoo. Peter was born on October 28, 1906 in Italy to Charles and Rosalie (Spagnolia) Caruso and immigrated to the United States in 1919 after World War I. He later married Mary D. Diamante on April 21, 1935 in Nashville, Michigan. Mary preceded him in death on February 10, 1989. Peter had been a confectioner for many years and owned and operated Caruso Candy Store in downtown Fremont for several years and retired from candy making in the early 1970s. He also enjoyed gardening. He is survived by his children, Rosalie (Nick) Zois of Oswego, Illinois; Rita (Jim) Terrill of Bloomingdale, Michigan; Phillip (Virginia) Caruso of Plainwell, Michigan; 6 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; his brother, Louis (Clementine) Caruso of Lansing. He was preceded in death by his brother, Sam Caruso and sister, Mary Spadafore. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 29, 2004 from the All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont with Rev. Father Tony Russo of the All Saints Catholic Church presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery. Friends may consider the All Saints Catholic Church for memorial contributions.
