Phyllis J. Jansma, age 85 of Fremont, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2015 at the Poppen Residence in Muskegon following a short illness. Phyllis was born on August 29, 1929 in Levering, Michigan to Ray Amos and Mildred (Bennett) Butterfield. Phyllis graduated from the University of Michigan where she met and later married Ray Jansma on June 16, 1950 in Royal Oak. Phyllis and Ray moved to the Fremont area in 1951 where Phyllis began teaching for the Fremont Public Schools at Pine Street School. Phyllis also taught private piano and cello lessons at her home for many years. She enjoyed gardening and cooking, discussing political issues, riding her bicycle. Phyllis played cello in the West Shore Symphony for several years and was active at the Blue Lakes Fine Arts Camp for many years where she was the founder of the Chamber Music for Fun Program and had taught the Stewart Method for Piano workshop. Phyllis also enjoyed sailing with Ray on Lake Michigan on the boat that Ray built. Phyllis is survived by her children, Timothy Jansma of Fremont; Jennifer (Chris) Chiles of Alvaton, Kentucky; Jon Jansma of Cleveland, Ohio; her grandchildren, Joe (Shannon) Jansma, Audrey Jansma, Mabel Jansma; her brother-in-law, Bob (Joan) Jansma of Fremont; several nieces and nephews. Phyllis was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Becky Jansma on September 24, 2014; and her brother, James Butterfield. A time of quiet remembrance and reflection of Phyllis' life will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at 3pm with a time of visitation with the family 1 hour prior to the services at the Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to consider memorial contributions to the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for a scholarship to be established in Phyllis' name.
