Obituary

Matthews, Rachel Marian Rachel Marian Matthews, age 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 8, 2006 at the Hackley Hospital Comfort Care in Muskegon, surrounded by the love of her children and grandchildren. Rachel was born on September 10, 1913 to Raymond Willis and Eva Belle (Hall) Knight in Little Falls, Minnesota. She graduated from Holton High School at an early age of 16 and married Fredrick Harvey Matthews on July 8, 1913 in South Bend, Indiana with local Holton family, John & Emma Fox as their best man & maid of honor. Rachel shared her life with her husband and children on the Matthews family farm following Harveys death on January 9, 1990 until April 2006 when she entered Heartland Health Care in Whitehall. She was a member of the Sitka United Methodist Church, attending Holton United Methodist Church in recent years; had been active in the Sitka Ladies Aide and was a member of the National Farmers Organization; and Michigan Farm Bureau. She had been employed at Gerber Products Company and also worked at H&R Block Income Tax in Muskegon. She also gained much satisfaction from preparing tax returns for her local farming neighbors in her home. She is survived by her children, Ella Mae (Richard) Matthews of Fremont; Wayne (Ann) Matthews of Hesperia; Linda (Leslie) Hile of Fremont; Les (Lois) Matthews on the family farm in Fremont; Cathy (Robert) Moore of Twin Lake; 15 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Rick Matthews; great grandson, Seth Beattie; her brothers, Denzil and Richard Knight; her sisters, Frances Jones, Cora Shephard, Eva Beckman and Ruth Bayne. Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 12, 2006 from the Crandell Funeral Home-Fremont Chapel with Rev. Jerry Selleck of the Holton United Methodist Church presiding with interment in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
