Obituary

Ralph R. Kent, age 75 of Fremont, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2008 with his loving children at his side at the Spectrum Health, Kent Community Hospital in Grand Rapids following a long illness with diabetes. Ralph was born on April 15, 1933 near Vernonia, Oregon in a logging camp to Robert Edward and Ila Gertrude (Olsen) Kent. Ralph started work as a logger and later moved to Seaside, Oregon where he graduated from Union High School and later attended and graduated from Oregon State University. Ralph started work with the Gerber Products Company in Oakland, California in 1960 and later moved to Fremont in 1963 where he and his former wife, Joy (Kent) Miller raised their family. Ralph retired from the Gerber Products Company as Director of Purchasing in 1990 after 30 years. Ralph was a veteran of the Korean Conflict where he served in the United States Army.Ralph enjoyed spending time with his family, attending various sporting events of his children and grandchildren through the years. Ralph was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling the world. Ralph is survived by his children, Kevin Kent of Zeeland, Michigan; Kenneth (Cindy) Kent of Hartford, Michigan; Karla (Thomas) Kent-Lonergan of Naperville, Illinois; his grandchildren; Ryan, Casey, Aly, Kelly, Kat, Kevin and Kenna. He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Kent; his sisters, Patricia McWhorter and Erma Kent; his former wife and longtime friend, Joy Miller in November 2007. Although saddened by his passing, we take with us his loving smile, compassion, tremendous sense of humor and the love he shared with his family. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2008 at 2pm at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel with Pastor Ronald Hansen of the Hartford United Methodist Church presiding. Friends may visit with the family from 12:30 until the time of the memorial services at the funeral home. A reception will be held at the Ramshorn Country Club from 3:30 - 5:30 and all are invited. Friends may consider the American Diabetes Association for memorial contributions in memory of Ralph.
