Raymond J. Smith, age 85 of Fremont, passed away Sunday, August 19, 2018 at the Transitional Health Services in Fremont following a short illness. Raymond was born on October 1, 1932 and graduated from Fremont High School in 1950. He married his high school sweetheart Marvel I. Dickinson on July 27, 1951 in the front yard of Ed Fox residence in Aetna. Marvel preceded in death on October 25, 2017. Raymond started working at Gerber Products Company when he was 18 and later retired from the Power House in 1994. Ray also started Smith's Christmas Tree Farm in Fremont in 1965 and continued for another 50 years until his retirement from the Christmas Tree Farm. Ray enjoyed traveling and camping with Marvel; had been a hobby farmer, enjoyed cutting wood, but generally just enjoyed working. Raymond was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Fremont. Raymond is survived by his children, Lois Jean Berthiaume of Midland; Randy (Neva) Smith of Fremont; Melinda (Dave) VanDenBerg of Fremont; his grandchildren, Dominica (Ivar) VanKoten of Virginia; Veronica (Jeff) Constantine of Nunica; Brad (Sarah) Berthiaume of New Limerick, Maine; Rebel (Leslie) Smith of Fremont; Miranda (Mark) Daniels of Ithaca, Michigan; James VanDenBerg of Newaygo; Tabitha Buck of Fremont; Jared (Michele) VanDenBerg of Cedar Springs; 14 great grandchildren; his brother, Valmond Smith of Fremont. Raymond was preceded in death by his grandson, Brian Lee Smith; his brothers, Darryl Smith and Donald Smith.
