Obituary

Richard "Red" Ranger, age 80 of Newaygo, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at his home. Red was born on September 17, 1940 in Newaygo and graduated from Newaygo High School in 1958. Red met and married Sherry Lydon on May 21, 1977 in Newaygo and has been a lifelong resident of Newaygo. Red had worked at Doehler-Jarvis in Grand Rapids and then began working at the City of Newaygo Department of Public Works where he built and operated the Wastewater Treatment Plant and later retired as the Superintendent of the Department of Public Works after 27 years. Red enjoyed fishing, being on the rivers and lakes in Michigan, hunting and golfing. Red was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he served in the United States Air Force and was a Life Member of the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsman's Post #4249. Red especially treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Red is survived by his wife, Sherry of Newaygo; his grandchildren, Christopher (significant other, Felicia) Ranger; Kenneth (significant other, JoJo) Ranger; Casey (significant other, Timothy) Ranger; his great grandchildren, Timothy Scott Ranger II; Jackson Ranger; Sophia Ranger; Cheri Jo Ann Ranger; Charles "Charlie" Emmit Peak; his brother, Marvin (Denise) Tjalma of California; 1 nephew, Justin (Heather) Tjalma of California; 2 nieces, Tracy (Joe) Williams of Connecticut; Kelly (Josh) Bigelow of Maryland. Red was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Scott Ranger on July 28, 2001; his mother, Laura Tjalma; and his sister, Kay Myott. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 11am at the Newaygo Cemetery with full military honors given under the auspice of the United States Air Force and the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsman's Post. Friends may consider memorial contributions to Hospice of Michigan, American Cancer Society or ALS Michigan Chapter in memory of Red.
