Surrounded by his family, Richard William Gale, 89, of Fremont passed away on Friday, December 3, 2021 at The Regency of Fremont. Richard was born in Flint, Mich. to Lewis and Marjorie (McGregor) Gale on March 12, 1932. Richard graduated from Davidson High School and then attended Eastern Michigan University, where he received both his BS in Education and his MAASE. He also met and married Joyce Smith while they both attended college there, and they married on June 14, 1952. They were married for 69 years. Richard had many jobs across the state in public and county ISD administration, including Muskegon, Grosse Pointe, Midland, Fremont and Harbor Beach. After retiring from school administration, he also received his realtor's license, working for Century 21 in Fremont and at New Focus at Gerber Memorial Hospital. Though soft spoken, he was well respected in the districts in which he lived and he was very community minded. He was a member of the Lions and Rotary clubs in the communities where he lived, holding various offices in both organizations. Richard was an avid hunter and fisherman. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling the United States with his wife in their motor home, going as far north as Alaska. They took many treks with the Allegro Ramblers motor home club. He also had a special place in his heart for observing lake life from his home on Fremont Lake, for Brittany Spaniels, and for prime rib. He would say that, along with his passion for education, his proudest accomplishments were being a good husband and parent, and spoiling his grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed attending as many of their activities as possible.
Richard is survived by his wife Joyce of Fremont; his daughter Cherrill Keel of Midland and her children, Matthew (Kelly) and Sara Adams; his daughter Joan (Ron) Vleim of Fremont and their children, Jason (Amanda), Bethany, Michael (Lisa) and Jenna; his son James (Julie) of Sandusky, Mich. and their daughter Ashley; and son Andrew (Laurel) of North Pole Alaska and their children, Kama (Paul) Mayne, Mahala (Christian) and Iain; and 10 great grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his infant son Richard Lewis; his granddaughter McKenna Gale; his great-granddaughter Samantha Keel and sister Norinne Telfer.
According to his wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of his life will be held at a later time with interment in the Perry McFarlen Cemetery in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan.
