Richard Dean Holt, age 78 of Newaygo and formerly of White Cloud, passed away Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Spectrum Health Gerber Memorial Health Services in Fremont. Richard was born on March 27, 1936 in Grand Rapids and joined the United States Army at an early age. Following his 4 year service in the army, Richard returned to Grand Rapids and married Mary Jane Schmidt on August 30, 1958 in Grand Rapids. Mary preceded him in death on October 23, 1997. Richard then joined the United States Navy where he served for 20 years at various ports throughout the United States. Richard returned to the White Cloud area in 1973 and worked at the Pantlind Hotel in Grand Rapids in the maintenance department for a year or so and then started work at NARCO in White Cloud where he eventually retired as maintenance supervisor, 3rd shift. Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, tinkering at his home and in his younger years, and riding motorcycles. Richard is survived by his daughters, Eileen Mary (Bryan) Duchane of Grand Rapids; Sandra Jane Holt (fianc, Ron Janose) of Alto; Cathleen Ann Holt of Newaygo; Jeanne Elizabeth Hammond of White Cloud; Richard Dean (Kim) Holt Jr. of Grand Rapids; John Matthew (Kathy) Holt of Traverse City; Mark Gerard Holt (partner, Jeff) of Prior Lake, Minnesota; 6 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; his brother, Randy (Elaine) Holt of White Cloud; his sister, Barbara Martens of Comstock Park. Memorial services will be held later in the summer at the family home following cremation. Burial of the cremated remains will take place at sea with military honors given by the United States Navy out of Norfolk, Virginia. Friends may consider memorial contributions to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans in memory of Richard.
