Obituary

Robert J. Bode, age 98 of Grand Rapids, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at the Devos Center – Holland Home – Raybrook Campus in Grand Rapids. Bob was born on March 21, 1921 in Fremont Henry and Reka (Rozema) Bode and graduated from Fremont High School in 1939. Bob joined the United States Navy Reserves where he served in the 44th Seabee Construction Battalion during World War II until his honorable discharge and return to Fremont. Bob married Lenora Vredeveld on August 16, 1946 in Fremont and they moved to Alameda, California in 1950. In 1989, Bob and Lenora moved to Longmont, Colorado where they were active in the SOWERS (Servants On Wheels Ever Ready), a Christian RV group that helped churches with their building programs. Lenora passed away on January 5, 1996. Bob move to the Covenant Village of Colorado in Westminster, Colorado in March 1996 where he earned the name "Mr. Fixit". Bob was an active member of the Arvada Covenant Church in Arvada, Colorado and traveled on numerous Inter-Generational Mission Trips. He was given 2 awards for his volunteer service, one from the Alaska Christian College in Soldotna, Alaska and the other for having traveled 25,000 miles with the Inter-Generational Mission Trips. Bob has been active in Gideon's International since April 25, 1961. Bob married Mona Jean (Miller) Canniff on December 27, 2002 in Arvada, Colorado and they moved to Holland Homes – Raybrook Campus, Estates I in Grand Rapids and was currently a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Grand Rapids. Bob is survived by his wife, Mona Jean of Grand Rapids; his daughter, Jeanne Bode Browning; his son, Elwood (Janice) Bode; step children, Nancy (William) Swaney; Ronald Canniff; Cathy (Danny) Cherpes; Mary (Ronald) Dunham; 15 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; his sisters, Betty Bode Bayless and Lois Bode Dusseljee; brother-in-law, William Sneller; sister-in-law, Jean Bode Sneller. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Louise Bode Stoub; his siblings, Barbara Bode; Charles Bode, Mariam Bode Sneller, Stanley Bode; his step daughter-in-law, Shirley Canniff. VISITATION : Saturday December 7, 2019 from 10-11am at the Raybook Manor Chapel 2121 Raybrook SE Grand Rapids MI 49546 with FUNERAL SERVICES : Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 11am at the Raybook Manor Chapel.
