Robert W. Gibson, age 88 of Fremont, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2023 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Robert was born on August 31, 1934 in Grant, Michigan to Lawrence Ray and Mable Pauline (Ackley) Gibson and graduated from Grant High School. Shortly after high school graduation, Robert was drafted into the United States Army where he served as a helicopter mechanic until his discharge and return back to Newaygo County. Robert met and later married Sheila Purcell on March 20, 1956 in Newaygo and Sheila preceded him in death on December 15, 2019. Robert has been a lifelong resident of the Newaygo County area – living in Grant, Newaygo, and Fremont and had been co-owner and mechanic of Newaygo Marine in Newaygo for many years until his retirement. Robert enjoyed woodworking, hunting in his younger years, spending summers and whatever time they could at their home in Nahma, Michigan (Upper Peninsula) and especially treasured the time he spent with his family. Robert is survived by his children, Shawn (Deb) Gibson of Hesperia; Steven (Mary) Gibson of Fremont; Brian (Kim) Gibson of Grand Rapids; Brendon Gibson of Hesperia; Stacie (Dawn) Gibson of Lansing; his grandchildren, Eric (Loretta) Gibson; Marielle (fiancé, DJ Dusenberry) Gibson; Colton Gibson; Zane Gibson; Nicole (Jonathan) Stafford; Joseph (Cruz) Gibson; Cooper Gibson; Kennedy Gibson; great grandchildren, Stephanie, Logan, Liam and Lily; his sister, Evelyn Davis of Grant; nephews, Robert (Gail) Davis and Mark (Tammi) Davis. Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Sheila; his brother-in-law, Morris Davis; nephews, Terry Davis and Roger Davis. A Time to Remember and Celebrate Robert's life will be held on Saturday, April 29, 2023 from 1pm - 3pm at the Stone Lodge 4707 Trillium Springs Blvd. Fremont Michigan 494125 Trillium springs Blvd. Fremont MI 49412.
