Robert Leroy Saum, age 91, of Fremont MI, went to be with his Lord, rejoining his beloved wife Arleen, on Thursday, September 12, 2019. Bob (Robert) was born on June 30, 1928, in Brunswick Michigan to Gayel & Lila Saum and graduated from Fremont High School where he participated in Football and Track. As a young man, Bob was an accomplished archer, competing in archery tournaments, with well-known archers such as Nels Grumley, Bill Loomis and Fred Bear. He enjoyed golf, as well as hunting and fishing. Bob retired from Gerber Products Company as the head of Maintenance Department in 1993 after 43 years of service. During his employment at Gerber, Bob met and later married Arleen (Zeeff) on March 23, 1974. Together they built their home and spent many years farming the land, raising and showing horses. Bob was a man of many talents. He was a skilled carpenter and self-taught machinist. He could usually be found in his workshop repairing pretty much anything that crossed his path. If a part wasn't available, he would just make one. He will be remembered by friends and family as selfless and kind. Always stoic, no matter the circumstance. You could count on Bob's welcomed smile, a story to share, light-hearted jovial whit and a listening ear. Bob was a longtime member of the Country Bible Church in Fremont. He was preceded in death by his wife, Arleen (Zeeff); his parents, Gayel & Lila Saum; sister, Geraldine Carpenter and grand-son Gavin Quick. He is survived by his children: Bruce (Kris) Saum, Molly (Glenn) Thompson; step-children Colleen (Glenn) Quick, Craig (Dianne) Ritsema; grandchildren: Jacob (Amanda) Saum, Jessica Saum, Amy (Matt) Bordeaux and Jodi (Dennis) Cosby; step-grandchildren, Colette (Chuck) Rogers, Melissa Edwards-Mumah and Dusten Quick; great grandchildren: Railee & Jailyn Saum, Emma Saum; step great-grandchildren: Dallas (Denise) Mumah, Joshua (Amy) Rogers, Autumn Erbes; Wyatt Quick, Whitney Quick; brother, Ken (Pam) Saum; brother-in-law, Richard (Lois) Zeeff, sister-in-law, Nancy (Larry) Kuipers, many great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Following his wishes for cremation, a Memorial Service will be held Saturday September 28, 2019 at the Country Bible Church in Fremont (3145 W 24th Street) with Pastor Len Lason officiating. There will be a time of visitation and receiving of friends starting at 10:00am, with a Celebration of Life Service to begin at 11am, followed by a luncheon. Private interment services will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery. For a more lasting memorial, friends may consider memorial contributions to the Country Bible Church in Fremont.
