Roger G. Marshall, age 84 of Fremont, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility in Fremont. Roger was born on August 27, 1926 in Belvidere, Illinois to George P. and Helen W. (Staas) Marshall and graduated from Belvidere High School. He later attended and graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelors Degree in Music and went on to earn his Master Degree in Education from the University of Illinois. Roger began teaching at the Haven Junior High School from 1950 -1970 and later went on to set up and teach the music program at the University Lake Prep School in Hartland, Wisconsin. He auditioned for and sang with the Pennsylvanians for several years. Roger was active in the Evanston, Illinois YMCA with the Brilliant Teens Program and had been active with Camp Echo for many years. In 1962, Roger started the Evanston to Camp Echo Program to open up the cabins at the camp and then back in the fall to close the camp again. Roger had been an organist for many years at the Evanston United Methodist Church and had played at the Fremont Christian Science Church for 27 years. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists, Muskegon Lakeshore Chapter. Roger has been active in the Fremont High Schools by accompanying the Fremont High School Choir as pianist from 1991 to 2008 where he has accompanied the choir to many state finals and also has served as accompanist for many students at state solo and ensemble events and also assisted in the music department of the Fremont High School Theatre for many musical performances. He has been an active supporter of the Fremont music community with being active in Stage Door Players musical programs, Fremont Chamber of Commerce Summer Concert Series, was a member of the Moonlighters, active in special singing and music at the Dogwood Center for the Performing Arts, and had been the pianist for the Fremont Rotary Club for many years. Roger had especially enjoyed his concerts and music programs with Chuck Witteveen and Bernadine Johnson. He served in the United States Army as a Chaplains Assistant during World War II and was a member of the Fremont American Legion Post #91. He is survived by his sisters, Carol of Illinois; Doris of Wisconsin; Betty of California; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; many special friends in the Fremont area. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen Marshall. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2011 with a time of visitation from 9-11am and services at 11am at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. During the memorial services, family and friends will have an opportunity to share a memory or Roger as well. Interment will take place in Belvidere Cemetery in Belvidere, Illinois following cremation. Friends may consider the Fremont Area Community Foundation for the Newaygo Medical Care Facility or the charity of the donors choice in memory of Roger for memorial contributions.
