Obituary

Roy Schreck, age 77, of Fremont passed away on Saturday, May 7, 2011, in Flint. Roy was born on May 29, 1933, in Detroit to LeRoy and Helen (Miers) Schreck and married JoAnn Spadafore on November 2, 1962, in Pontiac. Roy received undergraduate degrees in Biology and American History at Olivet College. He went on to receive a Master of Science/Microbiology and a Social Work degree at Michigan State University. At the Fremont Middle School he taught 8th grade life science for over 30 years, covering the walls and ceiling of his room with extraordinary projects that his students created. He established a Nature Center behind the school and used this outdoor classroom to teach students to build hiking trails, identify the vegetation, and monitor the wildlife. He taught American History at Jordan Community College for over 13 years. For many summers he was a director at the Gerber Boy Scout Camp and also worked as a counselor for at-risk children in Newaygo County. Roy had a lifetime love of sports. In his younger days he held the bodybuilding title of Mr. Detroit for several consecutive years. He founded the weight room for the Fremont school system, donating much of his own equipment to get it started. He was always available to train and demonstrate to athletes of all ages how to pump iron. When his sons were young, he coached the Valu-Land Little League Baseball team to multiple victories and a league championship. One of Roys proudest moments was being inducted into the Olivet College Football Hall of Fame as an offensive center the only player of that position to be so honored. Roy (a.k.a. Spike or The Baron) was known as quite a character and enjoyed wearing unusual hats around town, playing tricks on friends, and eating large quantities of Italian food. Many summers he traveled north with fellow teachers to Drummond Island on fishing expeditions for Coho, perch, pike, and walleye. He competed with his students for the most impressive stereo system and largest collection of vinyl records. He enjoyed all types of music including big band, jazz, symphony, country, rock, and opera. A special treat for him was to travel to Detroit to hear The Three Tenors in concert. He was an exceptional gardener and enjoyed creating Japanese-style rock gardens. Also, he was a huge Civil War buff and participated in local roundtables and enthralled his family with stories of the generals of the blue and gray as well as touring many battlefields and historic sites. Collected over many years, Roy had an extensive library of rare Civil War books that he donated to Olivet College. Roy is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, JoAnn; children, Helen (Pete) Whitlock of Atlanta, GA; Mary (Doug) Donovan of Lake Forest, IL; Mike Schreck of Ann Arbor; Vince (Holly Beckwith) Schreck of Portland, OR; Regina (James Gaskin) Schreck of Flint; sister-in-law Miriam Schreck of Traverse City; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ed Schreck. Visitation will be held from 5 8 PM, on Friday May 13, 2011, at the Crandell Funeral Home Fremont Chapel. On Saturday a graveside service will be held at 12 PM at Maple Grove Cemetery located at 804 South Division Avenue.
