Russell "Russ" Clinton Johnson, age 81 of Fremont, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at the Newaygo County Compassion Home in Fremont. Russ was born on March 30, 1941 in Shelby to Clinton Russell and Effie (Haken) Johnson and graduated from North Muskegon High School in 1959. Russ met and later married Linda Lee Proctor on September 2, 1960 in Muskegon and has been a longtime resident of the area. Russ loved life and learning new things. He was a member of the Cedar Creek Alliance Chapel and was a 70 year member of the Dalton Baptist Church. He had been a realtor, had worked at Pennington Brothers and had been a driver for the Amish for many years. Russ also had been a farmer for over 70 years and during those years, had over 1000 horses and had raised pigs north of Holton. Russ spent over 30 years with the Muskegon County Sheriff's Posse and had served as Captain for 25 years. He loved attending parades with the posse, camping and trail riding with the members. What Russ truly loved most in life was his FAMILY and getting together to EAT with them. Russ is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda of Fremont; his daughters – Kim (Jim) Stariha of Fremont; Kris (Bruce) Saum of Fremont; his grandchildren – Taira Stariha (John Fosdick); Tyler (Nicki) Stariha; Jacob (Amanda) Saum; Jessica (Kevin) Merrill; Kaylyn Buckner (Mark Nickelson); Andrew Hall; Ashley (Robert) Sholty; great grandchildren – Paige and Shelby Kinsey; Lainey and Kenton Stariha; Emma & Riley Saum; Jailyn Saum; Railee Durham; Natalie & Aiden Merrill; Natalie, Makenzie and Kenadie Buckner; Ian & Haylie Sholty; his great great grandson – Westin Tibbs; sisters and brother – Betty Smith of Bath; Leroy (Barb) Johnson of Ada; Bonnie (John) Gorenflo of Muskegon; several nieces and nephews; his best friend, Paul Carlson, who called him every day; his great caregiver, Rachelle Hallo; and his friends that felt like kids, Rob and Nancy Smith. Russ was preceded in death by his son, Russell "Rusty" Johnson Jr.; his parents, Clinton and Effie Johnson; his in-laws, Charles and Bernice Proctor; brothers and sister-in-laws, August Smith; Dave & Nola Proctor; Jerry & Merle Proctor.
