Sally Jo (Dickinson) Carbine passed away on September 24, 2021 at her home in Holland, Michigan, after a long battle with metastatic cancer. Her beloved daughter, sister, and brother-in-law were by her side. Sally was born in Fremont, Michigan to Walter "Bill" and Esther (Cornwall) Dickinson on August 9, 1940 and attended Waters School through the eighth grade and then graduated from Fremont High School in 1958. After graduating, Sally began work as a legal secretary for many years at Reber & Reber Law Firm and to Robert H. Phinny. She met her future husband Henry "Bob" Carbine in 1963 at a square dance. They married October 1, 1966 and celebrated 54 blissful years together. After their daughter, Amy, was born, Sally devoted most of her time to being a mother and a friend to many in the Fremont community. She also was a former member of the Business and Professional Women's Society, Red Hat Society, and served in the 1980s on the Board of Christian Education at the Fremont Congregational United Church of Christ.
After Bob retired in 1994, he and Sally traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and abroad. They visited all 50 states, enjoyed several Caribbean and Hawaiian cruises, and spent some time in England. They also escaped many cold Michigan winters by traveling to Florida and Alabama. On weekends, Sally often would travel with friends and family to local places like Traverse City and Mackinaw Island, Michigan and Shipshewana, Indiana. She enjoyed country music and dancing. Sally and Bob lived in Fremont until 2009 when they moved to Holland, Michigan. Sally continued her favorite hobby of meeting friends for coffee at a variety of places after moving to Holland, including many lunches at Evergreen Commons.
Preceded in death by her parents and husband, she is survived by the family she cherished, including her daughter, Amy Carbine of East Greenville, Pennsylvania; her sister and brother-in-law, Susan (Dickinson) and John Donahue of Traverse City; and two nieces, Dr. Tara Donahue and Tanya Donahue of Traverse City. Sally lived each day to be with the friends and family she loved. Her generosity and fighting spirit will be remembered by those whose lives she touched.
