Obituary

Zimmerman Jr., Samuel B. "Sam" Samuel B. Sam Zimmerman Jr. age 60 of Newaygo, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2007 at his home. Sam was born on January 8, 1947 in Fremont to Samuel Bruno and Lillian (Schultz) Zimmerman Sr. and later met and married DeDe Koewers on August 31, 1968 in Fremont. Sam has been a lifelong resident of the Newaygo area where he was the founder of the Zimmerman Sawmill in Newaygo which he operated for many years with his son, Sam III. After high school, Sam joined the United States Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam Era and was a member of the Newaygo V.F.W. Sportsmans Post #4249 and the NRA. Sam enjoyed spending time in the Michigan outdoors hunting and 4 wheeling and had been a motocross racer in his younger years. Sam especially enjoyed spending time with his family and reminiscing with his children. Sam also spent much time shooting his guns and loading and reloading his own shells for shooting. Sam is survived by his wife of 39 years, DeDe of Newaygo; his children and grandchildren, Cami (Scott) Dejager and their children, Eric and Whitni of Newaygo; Sam (Jennifer) Zimmerman III and their children, Cassie, Ellie, Abbie, Carly of Newaygo; his sister, Rose (Paul) Kolenbrander of Newaygo; his niece, Tracy (Quentin) Maes; nephew, Jeff (Carmon) Kolenbrander; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 21, 2007 at the Fremont Wesleyan Church 918 Garden Street in Fremont with military rites given by the Newaygo V.F.W. Love, Jim and Annie Larsen Posted 5/18/07 So sorry to read about Sam. I knew him from Hess Lake; He was such a great person. I wrote him while he was in Vietnam. He spent a night at our home in Grand Rapids when he few in with another service man. My Dad was so glad to help the guys with a ride. They both spent the night, and in the morning Sam had a ride back north, and and his friend caught a plane. I called him Rev. he was one of the good guys.
