Susan Jane LaVigne, age 69 of Fremont, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 following a long battle with cancer. Susan was born on June 16, 1949 in Muskegon to Robert and Ruth Mary (Fraser) Vanderwest and has been a resident of the Fremont area since 1976. Susan graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry and later graduated from Michigan State University with a Master's Degree in Food Science. She had worked at the Gerber Products Company as a senior research scientist for 30 years until her retirement. Susan was a member of the St. Michael Catholic Church in Brunswick and enjoyed horseback riding, hiking, traveling, attending gourmet food club, book club and crafts. She had been an active volunteer in the community at Truenorth food pantry, Fremont Area District Library, cancer support group. Susan is survived by her husband, John Rockcole of Fremont; her children, Jennifer LaVigne of Florida; John LaVigne of Fremont; stepsons, Ashley D. (Jacqueline) Rockcole of Victorville, California; Chase Rockcole of Seattle, Washington; her grandchildren, Alexia, Austin and Andrea LaVigne; Ella and Evelyn LaVigne; her sisters and brothers, Pamela (David) Bisson of Muskegon; Debra (William) Farabaugh of Florida; Judith (David) Pruim of Muskegon; Mary Jo Ames (Mary Corrigan) of Fremont; Linda (Daniel) Feldt of Fruitport; Benjamin Vanderwest of Muskegon; several nieces and nephews. Susan was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ruth Vanderwest and by her brother, Christopher Vanderwest.
