Honorable Terrence Richard Thomas, age 78, of Newaygo passed away on Friday, March 22, 2019, at the Newaygo County Compassion Home. Terry was born on September 4, 1940, in Windsor, Canada, to Lorne Burton Brien and Daisy Rosellen (Allen) Thomas and married Clifann Joyce Sage on September 21, 1963, at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Otsego. Terry graduated from Assumption Catholic Secondary School in Ontario, Canada and then Wayne State University in Detroit where he received a degree in education. He started teaching English at Dearborn Fordson High School and attended the Detroit College of Law in the evenings earning a Doctorate of Law. Terry and Joyce moved to the West Michigan area in 1968 and had a private practice and was an assistant prosecuting attorney. Terry began serving as 27th Circuit Court Judge for Newaygo and Oceana Counties in 1976. Terry was active in local organizations and believed in giving back to the community. Terry had a special place in his heart for horses and cherished time with his family.
Terry is survived his loving wife of 55 years, Joyce; daughter, Tracy Lynn (Rick) Anderson of Newaygo; and granddaughter, Alliey (Kyle) Christiansen; brothers and sisters, Ron (Carol) Thomas of Rockford, Jayne (Curt) Atchinson of Belleville, Ralph Thomas of Georgia, Mary Thomas Raymon of Romeo, and Victor (Karen) Thomas of Grand Rapids; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends.
A Celebration of Life for Terry will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019, from 5 - 8 PM at Camp Newaygo (5333 S. Centerline Rd. Newaygo, MI 49337 phone 231-652-1184).
