Thomas R. Weiss, age 64 of Newaygo, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 23, 2012 at the Spectrum Health Blodgett Campus in Grand Rapids. Thomas was born on June 22, 1947in Detroit to Eugene K. and Marcella (Van Gordon) Weiss and moved to the Newaygo area about 20 years ago. Thomas joined the United States Army and served 2 tours during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Croton American Legion, Post #381 where he had served as an officer for several years. Thomas had also enjoyed watching military, civil war history and cooking shows on television. Thomas is survived by his children, Ryan Weiss (Amanda Ropoleski) of Grand Rapids; Marcella (Ronald) Sievert of Highland Park; Ericka Lavley (Jeff Maiville) of Jenison; Melissa Shupert; 7 grandchildren; his sister, Kathleen Middaugh of Newaygo; his brother, Lee Roy Weiss (Mary Anderson) of Newaygo; 5 nephews. Thomas was preceded in death by his nephew, Kenneth Wells. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Marcella Weiss. VISITATION : Monday, April 30, 2012 from 12-2pm at the Crandell Funeral Home White Cloud Chapel. FUNERAL SERVICES : Monday, April 30, 2012 at 2pm at the funeral home with military rites under the direction of the Croton American Legion, Post #381. INTERMENT : Fort Custer National Cemetery near Battle Creek. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : The Thomas Weiss family to assist with expenses.
