Vera L. Kempf, age 85 of Holton, passed away Monday, November 19, 2018 in Muskegon. Vera was born on March 23, 1933 to Harris Edwin and Frances Elizabeth (Swenson) Cregg and later married Alvin Kempf on September 9, 1950 at the family home in Holton. Alvin preceded her in death on November 22, 2005. Vera graduated Valedictorian from Holton High School in 1949 and has been a lifelong resident of the area. Vera worked on the family farm where she drove tractor and baled hay each and every season since 1950 and raised quality beef and many other animals for 4-H. Through the years she also assisted her husband in the milk testing for "the old Newaygo County Herds" for DHIA. She was a member of the Holton Evangelical Lutheran Church where she enjoyed being a member of the Ever Ready Circle and sang in the church choir. She had been an active member in the community as a member of the Holton Township Historical Society. Vera was well known for sending letters of encouragement and information to family and friends while they were away from home or shut in's at their own home.
Vera was a lifelong member of 4-H and continued to attend weekly meetings where she was a positive role model and leader to the youth in her club. During her 66 years as a 4-H leader of the Happy Hustlers 4-H Club, she has touched and impacted the lives of over 50,000 youth and their families. She was recognized at the State level for being a 4-H Leader for 66 years and had been inducted into the Michigan Emerald Clover Society in 2008 with a class of others such as Frederick Meijer, Steve Thelen and Norman Veliquette all having an impact on the youth through 4-H. Vera was the first woman to serve on the Newaygo County Fair Board and had received the Heritage Award at the MAFE State Convention. Vera above all else took great pride and loved her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Vera is survived by her children, Alice Kempf of Holton; Joyce (Jack) Vincent of Holton; Stoney (Elise) Kempf of Holton; Matt (Lisa) Kempf of Holton; 10 grandchildren, Luke (Lori) Vincent; Larry (Marlene) Vincent; Katie (Chris) Hibbs; Travis (Leah) Kempf; Sara Kempf; Clint (Misty) Kempf; Maria (Dan) Kempf-Deleon; Melissa Kempf; Jocelyn Kempf; Felicia (Maverick) Stitt; 16 great grandchildren; her sister, Gail (George) McLaughlan of Evart; brother, John (Mary) Cregg of Ludington; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edwin Cregg, Bill Cregg, Claude Cregg, and Benjamin Cregg.
VISITATION : Friday, November 30, 2018 from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel 7193 W 48th Street Fremont MI 49412. HYMN SING : Friday evening from 7:30-8pm at the funeral home. FUNERAL SERVICES : Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 2pm at the Holton Evangelical Lutheran Church 6655 Marvin Road Holton MI 49425. INTERMENT : Holton Lutheran Cemetery.
