Walter Paul Coon, age 79 of Twin Lake, passed away Thursday, June 27, 2019 at his home. Walter was born on March 7, 1940 in Dalton Township to William F. and Hazel F. (Rasmussen) Coon and joined the United States Army before his high school graduation. Walter then served the next 21 years in the Army stationed at various locations around the world until his honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant. Walter had received many accommodations and awards for his service and had been a Green Beret in the U.S. Special Forces and paratrooper. After his retirement from the military, Walter worked various construction jobs in the United States and later settled back in Twin Lake in 2003. He was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church where he had been active, enjoyed gardening, woodworking, was a farmer at heart and had been past post commander at the VFW in Clyde, Kansas. Walter married Phyllis Garlic on March 17, 2003 in Muskegon. Walter is survived by his wife, Phyllis of Twin Lake; his children, Andrew J. Coon of Twin Lake; Denise Coon of Overland Park, Kansas; Paul (Shawnna) Coon of Lenexa, Kansas; Matt (Amy) Coon of Piper, Kansas; his stepchildren, David (Cherrye) Morris of Grand Ledge; Roy (Nancee) Morris of Portland; Linda (John) MacQueen of Minnesota; Debra Morris of Howard City; Carol Skowron of Grant; Glen (Vicki) Morris of Fremont; 25 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; his sister, Madelyn Coon-Beagle of Dalton Township; his brother, Bill (Joan) Coon of Twin Lake; several nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his sisters and brothers, Elbert, Lynn, Bob, Dwayne, Jean, Jerry and infant brother. VISITATION : Tuesday, July 2, 2019 from 10-11 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church 680 E Main Street Fremont MI 49412 with FUNERAL SERVICES at 11am and MILITARY HONORS following the services at the church.
