Walter Joseph "Joe" Schlientz, age 85 of Newaygo formerly of California, Washington and Grand Rapids, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2022, at the Newaygo County Compassion Home in Fremont. Joe was born on March 11, 1936, at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids to Walter Clarence and Anne Mary (Schneider) Schlientz and later graduated from Aquinas College, received his Master's Degree from Georgetown University and his Doctorate Degree from the University of Georgia. Joe went on to be a chemist and a professor and later in life an entrepreneur operating many small businesses. Joe has been a resident of the Newaygo area for the past 20 years where he was a member of the St. Bartholomew Catholic Church. He had been a Eucharistic Minister within the Catholic Church and also was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe will be remembered for his creativity, his ingenuity and his amazing sense of humor. Joe is survived by his children Teri Sarmiento of Orange, California, Greg Schlientz of Fargo, North Dakota, Kristine (Shonn) Wiscarson of Saugus, California, Karen Schlientz of Portland, Oregon, his sister Margarett Schlientz of New Berlin, Wisconsin, and his brother John (Suzanne) Schlientz of Grand Rapids. He also had 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren which he adored. Joe was preceded in death by his parents Deacon Walter and Anne Schlientz, his wife Evelyn Schlientz, and his son Mark Schlientz.
