Marilyn Garton Obituary

With the grace, dignity and love with which she lived her life, Marilyn Garton ended her journey on October 18, 2019, at age 82. Born in 1936, to Jack & Maude Sprague, Marilyn graduated from Cadillac High School in 1955 and married Merritt Mattson that same summer. They later moved to the Traverse City area before settling in Suttons Bay on a farm where Marilyn could indulge in her love of horses and animals.

An accomplished horsewomen, Marilyn was active in 4-H, the Michigan Trail Riders Association, and various therapy riding programs. She was a board member and Past President of the Michigan Association of Fairs & Exhibitions, and former Manager of the Northern District Fair in Traverse City.

Marilyn’s skills in the kitchen led her to cooking and baking for Millikens Tea Room and Bowers Harbor Inn in Traverse City. She also was a Dietary Supervisor at the Traverse City Medical Care Facility. Her interests were as diverse as hunting and interior design. She loved to cook and entertain, sing and make music, garden and travel. An avid reader with an inquisitive mind and a compassionate nature, Marilyn was always willing to lend a hand, an ear, a shoulder or some sage advice. She touched many lives in many ways and will be missed by family and friends across the country.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Steven (Susan) Mattson of Lansdale, PA, Becki (Herb) Saia of Newaygo, MI, and Jim Hansen of Sutton’s Bay, MI; grandchildren, Sam (Sue) Saia, Brian (Ashley) Saia, Carrie (Jon) Richter, and Danielle (Anthony) Scuotto; and 9 great-grandchildren. She is proceeded to heaven by her husbands, Merritt Mattson, Paul Hansen, and Robert Garton; and also by her grandson, Christopher Hansen.

A family celebration of life will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2019, from 1 - 4 PM at Camp Newaygo's Peggie Stone Center (5333 S Centerline Road Newaygo, MI. 49337).
