Rev. Orville Wells Babcock, age 90 of White Cloud, passed away Saturday, September 2, 2000 two weeks short of his 91st birthday. Orville was born on the family homestead near North Loop, Nebraska on Sept. 14, 1909 to Rolla and Estella Babcock. Upon graduation from Scotia High School he attended Milton College, Milton, Wisconsin where he was editor of the college yearbook and captain of the football team his senior year, graduating in 1932. The Seventh Day Baptist seminary at Alfred University, Alfred New York provided the first two years of training for the ministry with the final year taken at Auburn Theological seminary in New York. During his seminary training he pastured the Church of Alfred Station, New York and upon graduation became the full time pastor. During his tenure in Alfred Station he married Mabel Butts . After serving churches in Salemville, PA. And Milton Junction,WI. the family came to the White Cloud Seventh Day Baptist Church serving as its pastor for ten years. Orville became a teacher in the White Cloud Public Schools in 1958 retiring in 1972. In addition he headed the Newaygo County United Way campaigns for many years, and was a 50 year member o f the White Cloud Rotary Club serving as President and secretary. He sang in the Newaygo County Chorus for several years.
He is survived by his son George (Emmie) Babcock of Allegan; 3 grandchildren Eric Babcock, Kirk (Stephanie) Babcock, Ingrid (Andrew Life) Babcock; step children Bob (Vicki) Burke and Dick Burke, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters Erma Keown and Ruby VanHorn, brother Richard, his first wife Mabel and second wife Laura (Burke) Babcock.
Funeral Services were held on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 at the Seventh Day Baptist Church in White Cloud with interment in White Cloud Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Seventh Day Baptist Church of White Cloud. Arrangements by Crandell Funeral Home in White Cloud.www.crandellfh.com
