Jacob J. Saum

Jacob J. Saum, age 84 of Fremont, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at his home following a short decline in his health over the past year. Jake was born on March 15, 1935 in Fremont to Earl and Edith (McMillen) Saum and graduated from Fremont High School. Jake met and married Karlene Ann Odell on June 14, 1958 in Fremont and Karlene preceded him in death on May 31, 2016. Jake attended Barber School and worked as a barber for 14 years and then started work at Michigan Spring until his retirement after 28 years. He had also served in the Michigan National Guard for 8 years and was a member of the St. Andrews Catholic Church in Grand Rapids and had attended the All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont. Jake enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling, watching and following the stock market and working on his son Tim’s race car. After retirement, he enjoyed tinkering at home and spending time with his great granddaughter, Brighid and great grand dog, Drake.

Jake is survived by his granddaughter, Shannon (Trevor Jennings) Saum of Kalamazoo; great granddaughter, Brighid Jennings of Kalamazoo; daughter-in-law, Annette Saum of Muskegon; his sister, Carol Dull of Spring Lake. Jake was preceded in death by his wife, Karlene; his son Tim Saum on March 18, 2005; his sisters, Alice Bode and Marie Oppenheimer.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 3pm at the Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Fremont with Rev. Father Peter Schafer presiding. Friends may consider memorial contributions to the All Saints Catholic Church for memorial contributions in memory of Jake.
