Larry Anderson Obituary

Larry Richard Anderson, age 79, of Newaygo passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at the Newaygo County Compassion Home in Fremont. Larry was born on March 22, 1943, in Big Rapids to August Sylvester “Gus” and Alice Jane (Vliet) Anderson and married Artemisia Barrow Haggin on June 22, 1963.

After graduating high school from Big Rapids in 1961, Larry earned a barber license from LaMar Barber College and spent most of his years giving one of the best flat tops in the Big Rapids, Saline, and Newaygo area. Barbering was his favorite career, but he chose to serve the people of Michigan for 25 years as a Michigan State Trooper. Those years provided countless stories that entertained many, however those stories paled in comparison to the ones he told of his years as the Transportation Superintendent of Newaygo Public Schools. He will be remembered for his boldness and ethics to do the right thing always.

Larry was a best friend to many. You knew you were his friend if he fished or hunted with you, beat you in a hand of cards, were bestowed a nickname, surprised by him jumping out and yelling “bang” in your face, shared a golf game or made you a Manhattan. He loved to travel across the Americas hunting and fishing but being in the woods or water closer to home and on Drummond Island was where he found peace. He loved those things more when he was sharing that time with his wife and children. He often bragged of his wife’s successes on November 15 each year and knew his kids were some of the best morel hunters on earth. Larry enjoyed a good meal, which meant the portions were big and the bill was small. Weekends were for high school and college football and evenings were for “gray shows”.

His source of pride was his 59 year marriage to his high school sweetheart, his children, grandchildren & great grandchildren, who will miss his grimace of a smile each day.

Larry is survived by his wife, Artemisia; children, Kimberly Sue (Scott) Plzak of Avon, Ohio, Larry “Rick” (Tracy) Anderson Jr. of Newaygo, and Artemisia “Missy AKA Ratter” Nancy (John) Clark of Newaygo; grandchildren, Chelsea (Stephen) Stockhaus, Alexandra (Kyle) Christiansen, Laurel (Bryan) Reisdorff, Andrew Scott Plzak, and Chloe Artemisia Clark; great-grandchildren, Lucas Stockhaus, Spencer Stockhaus, and Emma Reisdorff; brother and sister, Terry (Beverly) Anderson of Holt and Susan (Virgil) Cimala, of Stevensville; and aunt, Nancy Horan of Big Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Alice Jane.
