Our Beginnings

Where We Are Today

For more than 120 years, the Crandell family faithfully served West Michigan with compassion, respect, and excellence. On November 20, 2023, Crandell Funeral Home merged with Ofield Funeral Home of Grand Rapids, owned and operated by fifth-generation funeral director Tim Ofield.

While ownership has changed, the locations and commitment to service remain the same. Families will continue to see the same dedication to honoring life and serving with care.

Crandell Funeral Home traces its roots to the early 1890s in Fremont, Michigan, when the Scott family operated a furniture and undertaking business. In 1902, Richard A. Crandell joined the firm, became a licensed mortician in 1915, and assumed leadership as the business evolved through new partnerships and locations in Fremont, White Cloud, and Hesperia.

In the late 1930s, Richard A. Crandell’s son, Jack A. Crandell, entered the profession, earning his embalming degree and license. By 1939, Jack and his family relocated to White Cloud to manage the business. A modern funeral home was constructed in the early 1950s, followed by continued growth, incorporation in 1979, and major expansions in White Cloud during the mid-1990s and the development of the Fremont Chapel in 1999. Today, both locations offer modern facilities while maintaining the dignity, personal care, and service that have defined Crandell Funeral Home for generations.
